Yearning to Learn

Lately I find myself browsing through university websites checking out courses. Whether it's another Masters or a Doctors (not the same as PhD) in Psychology or just further education courses, I find myself drawn to studying.

Why?

Well, part of me wonders if I'm just fucked in the head a sucker for punishment!

But then, there's another part of me that really wants to study clinical psychology. Or a new language. Or a creative writing course. Or a course in suicidology. (Yes, there actually is one!)

At the same time, I realise I cannot give up working at the moment. And any psych course would involve me having to cut down my working hours. I need the money. More importantly, I love my work. (Even though at the moment I'm bloody tired!) Pursuing a psych course would mean more anxiety in any case --- another thesis, assignments, placements, assignments --- I'd have to be reallllly good at managing my time. And while I have juggled work and uni, work wasn't psych work which is mentally draining. Work during uni was in the library which was quite all right. I guess the next psychology degree will just have to wait...

I am guessing I should settle for something lighter --- like learning a new language at community college. (Read: Not for the purposes of a degree)

But then here's the next big question --- which language?

German, Italian, Japanese and Modern Greek are some I'm playing with because I know people who speak these and it would help in practising the language.

But...

I studied French for 3 years (shudder!) and can't remember much apart from je m'appelle Psych Babbler, Tres Bien, and Au Revoir. I can't speak Hindi (used to speak Hinglish but after 5 years of no use...that's gone) nor can I speak Tamil (which happens to be my mother tongue) In short --- what hope do I have in learning a new language?

In spite of it all, I'm dying to learn. To have books. To take notes. To sit in a classroom.

Am I nuts? Especially given that I hardly have time.

Until next time,

Cheers!!!

  3. I have learnt some italian and japanese as i have lived in those countries. Have also played with a bit of german and greek. I would say italian may be easy to read and write and could give a better insight to the origin of a lot of latin-english words. Getting the vocabulary is easy, but the grammar can be tiring. Japanese is easy to learn to speak as their grammar is easy. However they have 3 set of scripts and they use these 3 in just one sentence. I learnt 2 out of these, but failed to master it as I didnt learn the 3rd one, kanji. Learning greek could be interesting at the beginning i guess. It is easy to start it if you know the greek symbols used in mathematics.

  5. Just go for it! Learning at earlier stages is much easier, once the "family" comes into picture, it would all be less and less time for anything outside...

  6. @ Titaxy: I'm starting to think that studying and all that goes with it can be addictive! What say?

@ Min Min: Thanks for that...I'm kinda thinking of actually sitting in a classroom and learning...and esp for languages, that would be the best way for me to learn!

@ Rocksea: I have an idea of some of the Greek symbols. And in all languages, grammar appears to be the killer, huh? I hated studying French grammar!!! :P

@ Solilo: That's amazing! Neuroscience wasn't my fav bit in psych (too biological for me) but cog psych was interesting. Enjoy yourself!!

@ Amol: Yeah...on the one hand I think this is the best time to study...but then again...who knows?

  7. A lot of my friends have studied German and found it pretty easy to grasp so maybe you could try that. But you said the school where you work has a lot of Greek students so maybe that would be a better option. Just my opinion.

  8. I love studying as well - I am currently trying to learn Dutch, studying the philosophical side of yoga (I've been doing the physical for years and thought looking deeper would be interesting) and thinking about doing an A level in history just for fun.

Psychology sounds good as well ... hhhhmmmm ...

Yep, I totally know where you are coming from.

  9. This seems to be an advert for Esperanto to me !

The World indeed does need a common auxiliary language.
