Hey, Hey, Gimme a Break...

So apparently, an Aussie TV show made news worldwide leading everyone to label us racist. Hey, Hey it's Saturday: The reunion (funnily aired on a Wednesday) is a form of variety show that used to air here till about 20 years ago. They were back for 2 episodes.

I was sort of half-watching it this week (read: TV on in the background while I was on the computer). Harry Connick Jr was one of the judges and there were 5 blokes that did the Jackson Jive which was a parody of the Jackson Five. One was supposed to be Michael Jackson and had his face painted white while the others had their faces painted black. Harry Connick Jr was disgusted with this and hence this made news worldwide. He talked about how they are in their country etc etc.

Now, the humour on this show is not my type of humour. I prefer the sarcastic and dry and politically incorrect stuff. This show just seemed to have a very 'meh' kind of humour...some things bring a smile but others you just couldn't give a shit about.

But, my point for this post is this: I did not find it racist (In fact, this was one I cracked a smile because these guys did it 20 years ago with Michael Jackson having a black face as well) Why is it racist when they are not intending to offend anyone? Just because Michael Jackson is now dead, does that mean it's wrong to crack jokes about him? We have a different sense of humour here down under which others don't seem to get. We love to take the piss out of people. Hell, we take the piss out of our own PM every week (see Rove Live).

And to those particular holier-than-thou Americans who seem to think they are past racism...give me a break. Hypocrisy is what it is. What about the movie 'White Chicks' where two African-American guys are dressed up as white girls...shouldn't that then be classified as 'racist' (and sexist) if this skit was? Shouldn't having the character Apu in the Simpsons be considered 'racist' given all the stereotypes associated with him?

And finally, here's what I found extremely funny about the Jackson Jive and the whole 'controversy'.

The guys that performed in the skit...the ones with their faces painted black and white...one was Indian-Australian, one Sri Lankan-Australian, one Italian-Australian, one Lebanese-Australian and one Greek-Australian.

Make what you wish of that!

On a side note: how did you guys stand this show even 20 years ago? I heard from a few friends how they used to love it. It's quite lame imho.

Until next time,

Cheers!!!

  1. Never been a fan of Hey Hey, but I would have to agree I don't see what the big deal is. Not too mention, I can't believe how much air time it been given by the media here and overseas.

  2. I think my upbringing makes me love sarcastic, American humor a la Chandler Bing. That's my favorite kind, heh, always cracks me up.

As for this particular TV show, kinda sounds like SNL? Never heard or watched it before.

  3. I only watched it only once and I don't remember hearing the word "racIST". What I saw was Harry saying something against "racISM". Just my take. Personally I am glad it got attention. As you may know the love of my life is black and I'm white. Just because of that I have seen more prejudice and outright racism than you could guess unless you have experienced it yourself.

  4. I never really got on with Hey Hey it's Saturday, and couldn't believe it when someone told me they were rehashing it!

Anyway, I had heard about the racism accuations but hadn't heard exactly what happened. Now I have heard, I am in total agreement with you. The skit was not racist. It may have been insulting to Michael Jackson (a publlic figure is open to this type of thing); some may have found it distasteful and "too soon" (not me - I am sick of everybody crying about Jackson's death), but it was not racist.

  5. @ Amanda: Yeah, you would think that the media would have better things to do...but then again, media world over has always been hypocritical and will jump on something.

@ Archana: Haven't seen SNL but thought that was witty and sarcastic too...this isn't very witty at least in my opinion.

@ MPH: Well, from what I heard here, they are basically talking about Aussies as being racist. I am not of a white background by the way...I'm of Indian origin. But I haven't faced any discrimination here in Aus and in fact felt India was more discriminatory based on skin colour (dark skinned Indians v lighter skinned Indians) I totally understand that racism exists but I think it exists everywhere in the world...and I think it's a bit hypocritical for the media to jump at one thing which wasn't even intended to offend anyone.

@ Sid: They were crying racism because of the black face paint...but I wonder why they didn't cry foul about the white face paint. We are all 'racist' in some way or the other...but this wasn't intended to offend anyone so I think it's just another case of the media jumping on the bandwagon of a celeb and making a big deal out of it...
