Baby on Board

When on the road one thing I notice is cars with this sign mostly on the rear window:

Yep, Baby on Board. Some others have 'Child on Board'. I assume the reason they have this sign is to inform other drivers that there is a baby in the car (or a child) and therefore the drivers need to drive carefully.

I have a question to the people that display these signs: Does this mean it's okay for me to ram into a car or drive carelessly if there is no baby or child on board? Do you think an adult's life is not worth as much as a baby or a child? Do you drive recklessly when your baby is at home?

Just thinking out loud.

Because when I got my license, I was under the impression that I had to drive safely at all times. Not just when there is a baby or child in the car in front of me.

On a different note, Over Cups of Coffee turned 3 a couple of days ago. I'm late. As usual. But Happy Birthday to my blog. And thank you to all the readers (regulars, lurkers, occassional guests...) who continue to visit and share thoughts Over Cups of Coffee! You make blogging even more worthwhile than it already is...

Until next time,

Cheers!!!

  1. Well this is my first time on your blog..and I must say I'm in love already. Your layout and the arrangement of widgets is beautiful! On the topic I still haven't learnt how to drive so I guess I'm in a position to evade all responsibility. :P
    Happy Birthday to your blog.

On a side note..I'm collecting votes for my 'Share Life' contest entry. So if you find this post worthy enough of one...do help by casting a vote. It will be a lot of help.

  2. It means the driver is not in a position to drive at high speeds, made sudden turns, brake hard or bank violently like how we usually may do sometimes in traffic conditions when they are not favorable. It means the driver is not in a zone of flexibility to make hard moves...

  3. That sign mostly makes me peep into the car to take a look at the cute babies :)
    And btw, Happy Birthday.

  4. oh first of all a very very happy b'day to OACC :) You know I had noticed the ticker in the side bar and thought I'll wish you on the D-day but it slipped :( Any ways..this blog is special for me too since it brought us together like friends and I get a lot of insight by reading your posts on several issues :) So YAY and keep the posts rolling :)

Okay coming to the title of the post..I think what people with the sign of BOB mean that the drivers to need to be extra careful than usual... :)

But I think it's always a nice idea to let people know like the learning sign displayed to let people know that there might be some errors in driving so stay away ;)

  5. Yay! Happy 3rd birthday!!!

I put the Baby on Board sticker out of sheer pride that we had a cuddly lil brat in our car!!! In fact when we moved to India with a one year old, 8 years ago, it was rather unheard of, and SH used to suspect that certain drivers would harass us more seeing that board...we are like this only in India!!!

  6. Happy Budday, PB!! I love your blog, and wish it many many more years of posts and traffic :-)

Btw, I've seen these boards too, and I think its to warn people to be 'extra careful'. But yeah, we should probably manufacture boards that read 'People on board' ;-)

  8. Happy anniversary!

But on to the Baby on Board bit.... i think your notion of why people use these stickers is a bit ridiculous. You probably intended for it to be tongue in cheek but it doesnt quite read that way. No, we parents who use them do not value our babies lives higher than others, nor do we expect you to drive more cautiously around us than you would alongside any other car. Rather its their to warn the aggressive, crazy, reckless drivers that WE THE PARENT may drive a little slower and more cautiously with baby on board, and as such dont deserve to be flipped off, beeped at or shouted at because of it.

  9. :D Happy happy birthday, dear blog :) I love this space!!! Keep it up and I hope to read you for years to come.

About the sign - it's probably just to let others know to be extra careful.

  10. Congrats for the 3rd blog bday PB :)
You know what.. many times I have seen people who put "Baby on board" driving rashly.. I guess they should first remember that there is a baby on board and drive carefully and then ask others to be careful.. There are many people who dont take proper care of their children.. they put their hands outside the window sometimes..

  11. Congratulations on the blog birthday, PB :)

I always wanted a baby on board sticker - more for 'cute-value' , but never got around to putting it up.

I do think it is to tell people that the car with the baby might be driving more cautiously and extra carefully, I guess...

  13. @ Samadrita: Welcome to my blog and thanks for the lovely comment about it! Thanks too for the birthday wishes! :) And will check out your blog and post...don't worry, I don't just give away votes ;)

@ Dilip: Welcome to this space! Thanks for that comment...I honestly did not know and did assume it was for other drivers to be careful. Thought it was one of those things like parents getting special parking spots in shopping centres because they have prams...

@ G: Long time, no see! I've gotten rid of disqus (hope you noticed!!) Thanks for the Blogirthday wishes =) And had to smile at what you do when you see the sign...

  14. @ Scribbler: Thank you! I'm glad the blog is special for you too...and yeah, thanks to the blog, I've made friends like you. And that's what I thought the sign was about...but thought as a driver, you need to be that way with every car. However, I think there are a couple of other people that have commented about what it really means. And now it makes sense! :P And re the learner plates...here it is mandatory. I am now on my P plates here and you get fined if you don't display them.

@ Starry: Haha...have to smile at your reason for displaying the sign. Yeah, I wouldn't dare put it up in India...people would probably drive a lot worse around you. And thanks for the Blogversary wishes...

@ Pal: Thank you! Like I said, it's readers like you that make blogging even more enjoyable than what it is! And well, turns out, the real reason for the sign is as mentioned in a few comments...the drivers of the car displaying the signs will probably be a bit slower. Honestly did not know that!

  16. @ Amy: I am sorry if you were offended by the post but I honestly thought till date that the reason people put the sign was for others to be more careful around them. I thought it was one of those things like how parents with prams get special parking spots in shopping centres. No one had been able to give me a response stating otherwise...possibly because no one I asked has kids of their own. Or if they do, they are teenagers and hence they haven't used the sign. I only found out now from you and another commenter earlier what it really is for and it does make sense now!

@ Titaxy: Thanks T! =) Would love for you to keep visiting...And re the sign, turns out we were wrong. Apparently it's to inform other drivers that the driver displaying the sign may be driving a bit more slowly or cautiously.

@ Avada: Thanks! Hmm...you are right...some people are like that and they shouldn't be permitted to display the sign!

  17. @ Smitha: Thanks Smitha! And yes, you are right re the reason for the sign...I just found out from a couple of comments earlier...you could still use it, don't you reckon?? :)

@ Roshan: Thanks! And do keep visiting =)
