The need to be filthy rich
The need to be skinny
The need to have the latest gadget
The need to be extremely pretty
The need to look one’s very best
The need for designer shoes
The need for the perfect partner
The need to have several from which to choose
The need to have the flashiest car
The need to be living in a multi-storey home
The need to have the finest wine
The need to travel to the likes of France or Rome
The need to have a high paying job
The need for perfect kids
The need to eat the finest foods
The need for pedigree pets
All these wants
That we confuse for needs
All these materials
Only heightening our greed
We are always wanting more
And living with discontent
Feeling down and desolate
Being unhappy with the present
Forgetting what it important
Food, shelter and clothing
And even more significant
Loved ones, not belongings
If we gave up these wants
And ‘needed’ a lot less
We’d be happier and content
With living life itself

ReplyDeleteNice verse.
ReplyDeleteAnd it's so right. In the end all we need is 'roti, kapda & makaan'. Food clothing and shelter. Everything else is optional, right?
Need; the synonym of life and living. Vouch your words.
ReplyDeleteExactly T! We feel happy for a while and then the next new thing arrives
ReplyDeletewhich we 'need' and we feel inadequate again...sigh.
Yep Mags! In order to actually survive, we don't need much. But boy, do we
ReplyDeleteall want a whole lot under the misconception that we will be happy...
Yep Prateek, we delude ourselves with all these 'needs'.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!
ReplyDeleteright you're...want and need are synonymously used which is not apt at all !
ReplyDeletenice arrangement of words PB,as always :)
so true....it is a vicious circle..wanting more and more in which most people get caught these days.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant poem. I remember the quote in context I am not sure if it is from Mahatama Gandhi or Emerson -
ReplyDeleteEarth provides enough to satisfy every man's need, but not every man's greed.
All that we need is contentment and peace!
ReplyDeleteThanks Nitya! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Nu...and yes, I think that's a mistake we make more often nowadays than probably our grandparents' generations did...
ReplyDeleteThe more we want, the less satisfied we are with what we have...
ReplyDeleteThanks Prats! And that's a really good quote...nice one to remember.
ReplyDeleteWelcome here Premi! Thanks for the prompt to give this opportunity to write this piece...and yes, in the end, all we need is peace and contentment which we won't get if our wants keep growing! :)
ReplyDeleteIf only we could correctly differentiate between needs and wants!
ReplyDelete...life would then be so much easier and happier, wouldn't it Akanksha?
ReplyDeleteWell Said...we need everything but never give
ReplyDeleteSo true!! We need to find gratitude in what we *do* have.
