My First Date

My very first date ever was at the ripe old age of 21. But it wasn’t the date itself that deserves the post. It was how the date came about that mandates one.

Like I said, I was 21 and had been in Australia for a couple of months. I was still in the process of finding my bearings. I had been attending university and was surprised to find how many spare hours I had! Life was starting to get a bit boring despite having made a few friends on campus. I was working for 6 hours a week at the uni library shelving books. That’s where I met the guy. I was in the sociology section and this guy asked me a question about where I could find a certain book. And well, doing my job, I showed him.

He thanked me and started talking to me. Asking me where I was from yada, yada. I talked to him because it was nice having someone to chat with and break the monotony. He was part American and studying and undergraduate degree {I’m guessing something to do with sociology!}. Anyway, in my extensive ramblings, I happened to mention being bored with nothing to do and well, he suggested ‘hanging out’ and showing me around and asked for my number.

Which I gave without a second thought. Because I was bored. And wanted friends.

And that’s what I thought it was.

Until later when I was telling another girl on-campus she laughed and said he had asked me out. I was pretty sure she was wrong. But turns out, not really. When he called later that night, it was to organise where to hang out. Coffee and something during the day. Apparently, a date. Even though I didn’t clarify it.

Holy shit.

I wasn’t even the least bit attracted to him. He was not even close to the type of guys I was interested in. ย He was only slightly taller than me. Had an ear piercing and his tongue pierced. A shaved head. Yeah, not really my type. But I had no clue what to do. In the end, I figured I’d go and see what it was like. After all, Iย was 21 and had never been on a date!

It was all right as far as first dates go. I can’t remember much apart from the fact that we went to Parramatta and well, had a coffee and a muffin or something. He refused to let me pay. We walked around a bit. Held hands. Yeah, a date. ๐Ÿ˜ He later suggested meeting up another day after his lectures. By then I was certain I wasn’t interested but had no idea how to approach the subject. Naive. 21. Never dated. Not a good combination.

On the day of the supposed second date, I went to the shops with my friendย C and her mum in the morning and we ended up getting delayed. I texted him while I was out with them to let him know that I wouldn’t be back in time. He rang me later and wasn’t happy. Said I’d ditched him. And honestly, I had no intention of hurting anyone. By then, I realised I had to bite the bullet and say something. So I made up the {almost legitimate} excuse that I wanted to focus on my studies and did not want to get distracted by dating. Yeah. I played the Nerd card! ๐Ÿ˜›

And that was it.

I still find it funny how I had no clue I was being asked out on a date. It might have been a different story had I known.

What about you? Do share your first date experiences with me!ย

Hahaha quite some experience that one :) . BTW, the nerd card always works. ALWAYS.

My first date was at 17. He was my senior and quite a popular hunk and I was obviously thrilled when he asked me out. We went out for coffee and he dropped me home. That is when I realized that he hardly conversed in English. He spoke Hindi and I do too pretty fluently. The second date happened the next day and I knew that would be my last date the minute he spoke the first sentence in English, “Myself do not likes talking in yenglish”. Yeah, that’s what he said! ๐Ÿ˜

And just like you, I played the nerd card and got out. 12th exams and all that jazz. The moron believed it! Just like how I expected! ๐Ÿ˜€

Honey, I’m 45 and still haven’t figured out how to gracefully let someone down. It’s HORRIBLE. I think you did well. When I was young I would just ignore their calls till they went away!!!!!!

My first date was at 23, I think! And i dated him for quite some time.. Eventually things faded and we went our ways.. I never had to turn any one down, realizing that he isn’t the right guy/girl! ๐Ÿ˜› I dated all of them for a long time..and some even went on to become relationships! :) <3 that's me..that's how I dated! ๐Ÿ˜›

But you did, quite an intelligent thing there! good riddance ๐Ÿ˜›

Oh it’s so awkward trying to be the one breaking up. Had to do it three times so far and it sucks. Mind you, being told that they are not ready or something along those lines is no picnic either! ๐Ÿ˜

Aww…well, I’ve been on the receiving end where guys are not ready for a relationship or just the usual it’s not you, it’s me thing. Not the nerd card though. ๐Ÿ˜›

Ah well, I reckon all our dates make good stories…some day we might find someone compatible. If not, I’m sure we are still pretty damn comfortable in our own skin! :)

Dating and breaking up – quite an experience, isnt it? Loved your honest take on it though. But yes, letting someone down nice and easy is a quite an arduous task !

Like you I never knew I had a first date too – the most gorgeous guy in the world bought me a ticked to the school dance! I was only 13 – no wonder I knew nothing about dating and eventually I was too shy and completely daft to take it further. Darn. btw the nerd card is a great card to play.

HAHAH My first date was in the age of 19 with a creep. Just like you, I had never dated before and needed friends in an unknown city. Ended real bad (consisting of a few threats by him).
After that I have never dated. Made a friend, who became a best friend and then someone I loved. Never dated. Hah.
    This was a cute post!!!
